5. Effects of the overload To evaluate the effect of an initial overload on fatigue strength in a welded structure, three levels of overload were considered: overload corresponding to the local stress at the weld toe (  l ) equal to 1 YS, 1.2 YS and 1.56 YS, knowing YS = 436 MPa. If the nominal stress (  n ) is considered, the overloads applied on the structure correspond to 0.6; 0.8 and 1 YS min respectively, YS min = 355 MPa is the minimum value in Standards. 5.1. Overload determination To calculate the force (F) to apply on the welded specimens, the local stress at the weld toe (  l ) was defined by the formula (1).
