3. Proposed stress concentration factor k c along the cut

In order to simplify the use of the stress concentration factors, the same now well known class of reference of 71 MPa from Table 8.2 of EN 1993-1-9 [17] also used for the flange is adopted for the stress along the cut. The cut is supposed to present the standard minimal quality of gas-cut without grinding as described in category (5) from Table 8.1 of EN 1993-1-9 [17] with the class of 125 MPa. The figure 16 presents the finite element results. In red color is represented the SCF factor according to the formula proposed below when the reference class is taken at 71 MPa. Every point in blue color is the result of a finite element evaluation.

Figure 16 : Overview of FEM results and proposed concentration factor

The corresponding stress concentration factor kc is defined as follow :

c = Max ( 1; ( A 1 − ) 0 , 5 + B. ( 2 1 ) 0 , 3 + C + D ⁄ ( 1 − ) 0 , 7 ) ( eq. 2 )

with e = 16 mm where e, t 1 and t 2 in millimetres A = 1,30 mm 0 , 5 B = 0.45 C = 0,35 D = 14 mm 0 , 7
