3. Selected numerical and experimental results 3.1. Results of numerical simulations of impact damage response
The FE simulations of impact loading of the tested PMC structures were performed in order to justify the observed experimental results (Danek et al., 2020). The obtained results in a form of failure maps depict the delamination areas (marked in red) as well as cracks (marked as exclusions of elements) in particular interfaces due to exceeded stress values according to the applied Chang-Chang failure criterion. An example of the FE-based damage maps is shown in Fig. 2.

3.2. Results of processing ultrasonic scans The acquired ultrasonic B- and C-Scans were reconstructed to the form of 3D damage maps using the custom-made algorithm based on image segmentation and morphological operations. The applied procedures allowed removing measurement and processing noise from the scans. In the next step of the reconstruction, the resulting delamination areas were attributed to the appropriate depths at which these delamination appeared based on the real dimensions of the tested specimen. An exemplary reconstructed damage from the C-Scan is shown in Fig. 3.
