. Quasistatic tests were performed on the Schimadzu servoelectric testing machine AGX-Plus at load rate 1mm/s which corresponds to the strain rate 0.067s -1 . Upper clamp is the custom made in order to provide visibility of the sample for DIC (Fig. 4 left). Contact surface of the clamp has hardness of 60HRC.

Dynamic tests were performed on the SPHB apparatus (Fig 4. right) with the rods made of maraging steel. Rod diameter was 25mm (Davydova and Uvarov (2013)). Filming for DIC was performed using Photron FASTCAM SA Z type 2100K-M High-speed camera at 200k FPS. Failure of the specimen in most of the cases takes less than 10µs which corresponds to the 1 frame. In rare cases it was possible to catch the crack propagation (Fig. 5).
