4. Conclusions In the present work, a numerical model for the prediction of the flexural behaviour of FMLs (Fibre Metal Laminates) was proposed and validated. The model was conceived to predict both the failure of the composite material fibres due to normal stress and the composite material delamination due to shear stress. To validate the model, three-point bending experimental tests were carried out on both long and short beams, to obtain the former and the latter stress state, respectively. The proposed model was able to predict the flexural behaviour; in fact, the load-displacement trends calculated through the numerical model were similar to those determined by experimental tests, for both the long and short specimens. Moreover, the failure zone was correctly identified in both cases. As future development, a model to predict the behaviour of the composite material-metal sheet interface will be implemented, in order to evaluate the FMLs presenting a weaker interface: for example, that obtainable by using the prepreg resin as the bonding agent, instead of the structural adhesive.
