Introduction The paper reviews previous works by the author on fatigue & fracture crack paths in cold drawn pearlitic steel. On the basis of the multi-scale (or multi-level) microstructure of the analyzed material, it is related to the conceptual frame of the painter Maurits Cornelis Escher and the musician Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition, the paper represents an orteguian approach (in the sense of the circumstance formulated by José Ortega y Gasset) and, as it revisits previous scientific works, the article can be considered as a heartfelt tribute to Fray Luis de León´s “decíamos ayer” ( as we were saying yesterday ) after the 800 th anniversary of the University of Salamanca (Fig. 1). 2411
