In order to increase the sharpness of the specimens we started them with a razor blade before each test, also to reduce the friction problem we placed two Teflon films between the lips of the notch. The test pieces were placed in a 4-point bending device with a static loading of 2mm/min. 3. Calculation of the toughness of solid wood in mode II using designed prototype All test pieces were taken from the logs of Eucalyptus Grandis wood as described above. The test pieces are notched along the longitudinal direction in the TL plane so that the rings are parallel in the TR plane. The travel speed of the test member shall be 0,5 mm/min. The test is interrupted when a sudden drop in load is observed. Fig 3 represent the typical displacement load curves of Eucalyptus Grandis for notch lengths of 4 mm and 12 mm.
