4. Conclusions This research investigated the effect of loading modes on CTOA based on the finite element analysis of DWTT models under bending and tension boundary conditions. A few conclusions can be drawn from this research: The damage model and element deletion technique to simulate crack initiation and propagation are found to be accurate and agrees well with test data. Newly developed technique to automate the process of measuring CTOA behind crack tip agrees well with previous research. The CTOA distribution behind crack tip is found to be consistent up to the half-thickness distance behind crack tip, where CTOA starts to increase gradually.
