cheap and simply available compared to materials commonly used as impact attenuators like aluminum, honeycomb, Nomex, carbon composite, Kevlar, aluminum foil or a mixture of those materials. This study aims to analyze the crashing behavior of the impact attenuator with waste food cans for a race car. To investigate the energy absorbing capability, the numerical simulation uses the Finite Element software ANSYS LS DYNA. Additionally, numerical simulation was founded with a universal testing machine that supported the quasi
static condition. 2. Methodology 2.1. Geometry and material
Impact Attenuator in this study consisted of 3 parts. The first is a waste of food cans, then the rigid plate, and the last is the anti-intrusion plate. Waste food cans are arranged in 2 levels. The first level is arranged with 6 cans, then on top of 5 cans. Waste food cans have a diameter of 72.4 mm with a thickness of 2 mm and a height of 113 mm. The rigid plate has a size of 250 x 250 mm with 2 mm thickness, which serves as a buffer for the cans at the top. The last part is the anti-intrusion plate, which has a size of 325.4 x 305.4. The total height of the overall impact attenuator is 232 mm, as shown in Fig. 1 below.
