In this conceptual framework, any material can be considered as a structure (a quite more general concept with a broader meaning and comprising also, e. g., the structure of a Bach’s fugue or of a Beethoven’s symphony), such a structure being analyzable at different geometric levels or length scales: mega-, macro-, micro- and nano-levels. © 2020 The Authors. Introduction The concept of structural integrity has a very broad nature that can be analysed from a multiple perspective. In particular, different length scales of analysis (mega, macro, micro and nano) can be used in the form of multi-scale approach and the relationship between the concepts of material and structure may be the matter of discussion. This paper tries to provide insight into this important issue in the road towards a new concept of structural integrity . is a er ffers a el a f r ar -l i a r ac t t e c ce t f str ct ral i te rit , c risi a c eri all le t scales in the conceptual framework of the innovative concepts of mega- , macro -, micro- and nano-structural integrity , and thus t e scie ce f fract re ec a ics & structural integrity can be considered as a branch of material science & engineering, and the novel concept of material integrity ca als e c i e , si ce crac -li e efects ca affect aterial e a i r.
