This introduces a necessity of using numerical models for the prediction of the residual life of structures with BVID in order to reduce the number of experiments on real components and make it possible to predict various scenarios of BVID and the resulting structural residual life. Modeling of such a complex phenomenon is usually very challenging, and numerous factors and parameters should be taken into consideration in order to reflect the true damage form. In this study, the authors analyzed selected parameters of numerical modeling of this phenomenon. © 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Introduction Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) found a wide applicability in aircraft structures due to their superior strength and mass properties as well as resistance to environmental conditions. Nevertheless, PMCs are very susceptible to impact damage in general. This susceptibility is the highest for carbon fiber-reinforced laminated structures, and the most dangerous case for such structures is the low-velocity impact (LVI) loading. Under such a loading the PMCs do not reveal any significant indications on their surface, while the internal structure of damage is usually extended r e e 1st Virtual Conference on Structural Integrity - VCSI1 Analysis of selected parameters in numerical modeling of low velocity impact damage in composite structures Wojciech Danek a, *, Andrzej Katunin b , Angelika Wronkowicz-Katunin b a Silesian University of Technology, Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Konarskiego 18A, 44-100 Gliwice, Poland b Silesian University of Technology, Department of Fundamentals of Machinery Design, Konarskiego 18A, 44-100 Gliwice, Poland Keywords: low-velocity impact; barely visible impact damage; composite structures; numerical modeling
