Other results of the G-36 tests showed that laser peening prevented CISCC in 304 stainless steel U-bends as well as thermally sensitized panels of 5083 and 5456 aluminum alloys. The current work includes stress measurements vs. depth using a slitting technique and 2-dimensional residual stress measurements by Hill Engineering using a Contour method both confirming the depth of compressive stress generated. The high energy laser peening offers an excellent safety margin for structural integrity of spent fuel dry storage canisters and alleviates concerns of local communities hosting Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations (ISFSI), concerns related to cracking prior to moving canisters to a permanent repository facility.
