The step loads and the durations of application are given in Table 1. The LVDT extensometer output for the duration of the test is given in Fig. 18. During the 3 rd step load (8109kN) the extensometer recorded a gradual increase in the displacement between the loading pins of the chain link by about 0.02mm, over a period of about 850 hours (see Fig. 19). This was an indication of possible crack extension under constant load.
