4. Conclusions

This study aims at acquiring the geometry of the interior surface of a wind tower. The objectives are to obtain the geometrical changes due to the welding process over wind tower fabrication. To fulfil the research goals, a 3D laser scanning system was deployed to scan the tower’s interior surface. As a result, the tower profile was successfully acquired as a point cloud. The obtained results allow us to infer that the supporting methodology has the potential to obtain the tower shape and make it possible to characterize the geometrical changes. The tower may deform in some places due to welding conditions and also because of the tower’s own weight which may result in residual stress occurrence along the welded spot. The 3D LSS is therefore advantageous, since it is capable of acquiring the tower shape and measuring the geometric changes. Therefore, the deployed system may assist in fabrication industries to correct the geometrical imperfection caused by the deformation. Behzad V.
