The sliding of the equivalent specimen in the fixtures seats is evident (see Figure 12 b): the problem is common to the standard specimens, albeit to a lesser extent. In the case of fixtures for the equivalent specimen, however, it is possible to estimate a corrective factor that makes it possible to obtain gage length deformation starting from crosshead displacement. The geometry of the specimen shoulders remains constant and it is believed that the strain deviation can vary according to the stiffness of the material and/or the coefficient of friction between specimen and fixture. The same activity is more difficult to achieve with the traditional fixtures because the fixture-specimen interaction is difficult to model due to its strong dependence on the clamping force, which is not always the same for different materials. A numerical model to accurately analyze the specimen-fixture interaction and the sensitivity study to the variation of parameters such as elastic modulus of the tested material, friction coefficient between specimen and fixture seat, tolerance in the seat, is under development and will be object of future works.
