They are based on the assumption that fatigue is an energetic phenomenon and dissipative effect of materials subjected to external load is an indicator of microdamage occurrences. In this work, an innovative approach was applied to detect the onset of microplastic deformation and crack initiation using Infrared Thermography (IR) by monitoring the temperature evolution during stepwise fatigue tests performed on both conventionally manufactured and additively manufactured AISI 316L stainless steel. The energy associated with plastic strain in the High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) regime was estimated from the stabilization temperature. Furthermore, an effective thermographic method was implemented to assess crack propagation behavior in the final stages of fatigue life, enabling the prediction and characterization of this phenomenon. 1. Introduction Fatigue is an energy-based phenomenon. Many researchers, starting from this assumption, proposed their own methodology to rapidly and efficiently assess fatigue life monitoring parameters describing energy release during The fourth European Conference on the Structural Integrity of Additively Manufactured Materials (ESIAM26) Thermographic detection of crack initiation and growth in conventionally and additively manufactured stainless steel Davide D’Andrea*, Dario Santonocito University of Messina, Department of Engineering, Contrada di Dio, 98166 Messina, Italy
