parameters (coefficient of friction). Wear evolution was calculated through the use of the LS-DYNA wear calculation capabilities (*CONTACT_ADD_WEAR), which provides a means of updating local wear depth based upon local pressure and slip/velocity [9]. 2.6. Post-processing and scaling Wear depth and wear-related metrics were produced and stored in LS Pre-Post, along with other output files such as Sliding Distance Maps. Since the explicit simulation time was significantly shorter than the actual experiments, we used equivalent wear results to convert from the explicit simulation to the target operating duration (190 minutes) [4], if wear accumulated linearly and consistently over the entire run. 3. Validation Results from the FE analysis compared to reference wear data for a baseline case were successfully validated. Wear scar locations and wear depths for the simulated and reference conditions were consistently similar, giving confidence that the FE model is accurate to be utilized for benchmarking across the different loads, speeds and casing grades.
Wear track side view
Figure 2: side view of the worn casing made of L-80 at 115rpm and 1000N after 1s
The chosen conditions were a rotational speed of 115 rpm and a load of 1000N, and the error between the experimental results to the simulation had an error of only 12.4% in wear depth
4. Results and Discussion 4.1. L80 vs P110 grades comparison
In the side-by-side comparison of the specimens under the same conditions, it is observed that the P110 casing grade has improved wear resistance when compared to the L80 casing grade because of the P110 casing's higher levels of hardness (Table 1). However, the magnitude of the benefit may vary depending on the conditions of operation. Under a high load/low speed (115 RPM and 1400 N), the wear associated with the P110 casing was found to be approximately 35 percent lower than that of the L80 casing. Under a milder/high-speed condition (207 RPM and 1,000
