1. Introduction The severity of wear depends on the synergistic effect of operational parameters (side load, rotational speed, contact time) and tribological parameters (friction and wear properties at the contact interface) . Experimental tests provide valuable insight but are time-consuming and expensive, and it is difficult to cover the full operational envelope met in the field. Consequently, validated numerical models are used to predict wear trends, compare design alternatives, and support operational decisions [1][2]. Differences in hardness and strength can affect wear performance as well as operating parameters. Case grade selection can also affect wear performance. Operators may consider upgrading from L-80 to a higher grade P110 at intervals that are expected to experience high side load and extended sliding contact in practice. However, such decisions should be supported by a clear quantitative comparison of the wear response of L80 vs P110 under controlled loading and speed. Therefore, this work develops a finite element wear model and applies it to compare the L-80 and P110 casing grades under different representative loads and drilling conditions [3].

2. Methodology 2.1. Model geometry and FE setup
A 3D FE model was developed to simulate the interaction between a casing segment and a tool joint segment [4]. The segment approach reduces the computational cost while keeping the local contact physics that govern wear. The model was developed in Space-Claim and solved in ANSYS Workbench LS-DYNA with an explicit contact formulation for sliding contact problems.
