A computational workflow was developed to calculate and evaluate the impact of cross-sectional area on structural compressive failure. It was found that a higher frequency of large cross-sectional areas in the structure correspond to greater compression strength. Furthermore, structures with smoother geometric transitions exhibited enhanced robustness. Abrupt cross-sectional transitions between significantly differing areas were identified as critical factors contributing to stress concentration and crack initiation within the structure. Cracks tend to initiate in regions with steep inclinations and subsequently propagate along surfaces inclined at angles greater than 55 ° . Stress concentration was also observed in vertically inclined regions. The findings of this study comprehended the effect of local structural geometry on the compression failure of four typical TPMS unit cells. These may contribute to advancements in topology optimization of heterogeneous TPMS porous structures, facilitating the combination of diverse TPMS geometries to capitalize on their advantages and limitations.
