The use of computational tools capable of accurately describing the behavior of individual elements and their interactions — although requiring greater computational e ff ort — allows for a significant reduction in the conservatism of the analyses, depending on the achieved level of knowledge. These results strongly underline the importance of a gradual and scientifically grounded approach to the seismic as sessment of existing masonry bridges. Only through accurate characterization of the structure is it possible to identify realistic collapse mechanisms and define e ff ective, targeted, and sustainable intervention strategies involving safety, e ffi ciency, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The investigation and the evidence presented in this study provide a concrete and valuable contribution for profes sionals engaged in the safeguarding and seismic upgrading of historic structures, demonstrating how knowledge is the most powerful tool to transform a constraint into an opportunity for conservation and enhancement.
