This is particularly vital in seismically active regions, where hidden damage can significantly compromise resistance. Bolzano's model offers a compelling framework for enhancing long-term bridge safety and reliability internationally. 5. Conclusions and future developments The Italian bridge guidelines are a crucial step towards effective infrastructure management, but there's room for further improvement. Specifically, more sophisticated and quantitative Bridge Health Indexes (BHIs) are needed to move beyond current qualitative assessments. Implementing these BHIs would allow for more objective and continuous monitoring of bridge conditions, leading to better proactive maintenance scheduling and resource allocation, especially in high seismic risk areas. This would ultimately create a more robust and reliable system for managing Italy's existing bridge infrastructure, especially in contexts with high seismic risk.
