It was shown that the mechanical contrast must be considered in a more complex way than proposed in literature. Ceramics are not sti ff er than a metal matrix per se. However, this di ff erence in sti ff ness has a considerable influence on the dispersion process and therefore on the development of the microstructure via Zener pinning. The process of dispersion during HPT is still a matter of debate. It is important to consider the mechanical contrast between matrix and particle since this contrast determines the excess stresses at particle edges and therefore particle erosion. Non the less, the HPT route can be considered to manufacture smart materials. The ceramic particles can be further functionalized and hence add besides mechanical and thermal enhancements a multipurpose to the embedments.
