3. Results Figure 4 shows the resulting displacement field measured in the last captured image, i.e. image 39. Figure 4a shows the displacement field overlayed on top of the image of the specimen. Figure 4b shows the results of the post processing on the last image. In particular, the detected crack path is in magenta. The first crack is found in image 16. It can be observed that the crack path is reasonably estimated and follows the discontinuity visible in the displacement field measured by the DIC. There are however some visible outliers. On the left-hand side of Figure 4b, the outliers indicated by the arrow pointing upwards are the result of the presence of the crack starter notch which limits the number of cells, i.e. the amount of data available in A j , on which the evaluation of the regression coefficients, hence the Chow test is performed. The outliers identified on the right-hand side of the image as indicated by the horizontal arrow, are caused by the presence of the backing of the crack gauge.
