4. Conclusions In this study, a nonlinear numerical strategy based on the Discrete Macro-Element Method (DMEM) has been applied for the assessment, under operational and horizontal loads, of a four span railway masonry arch bridge before and after a structural retrofitting consisting in the introduction of external steel corrugated plate confining a concrete layer at the intrados of the existing arches. The reinforcement arch is founded on a new reinforced concrete foundation representing an enlargement of the existing one. The Maletto railway bridge has been numerically investigated considering its structural performance in the unstrengthened as well as strengthened conditions. Push-down and push over analyses have been performed to evaluate the role of the adopted structural retrofitting under operational loads and horizontal actions. The push-down analyses allowed evaluating, for different positions of the operational loads, the load bearing capacity of the bridge. The mass proportional push-over analyses have been performed in a transversal direction corresponding to the axis of symmetry of the curved bridge showing a significantly improved behaviour when the versus of the load distribution is applied inward since the bridge convexity enhances the lateral resistance. The results showb that the applied traditional structural retrofitting provides a significant increase of the ultimate resistance as well as ductility of the bridge for vertical as well as horizontal loadings.
