1. The Motorway The whole of A24 and A25 motorways links two important regions of central Italy: Latium (Rome) on the West Coast and Abruzzi on the East Coast (Adriatic Sea). The A24, Roma- L’Aquila -Teramo, develops 166 km), via the regional capital city L’Aquila and Teramo. The A25, Torano-Pescara, is a South branch, 115 km long, departing from the A24 after the Country divide of the Apennines at Torano and reaching Pescara, where it meets the coastal motorway A14 (fig. 1).

The impervious orographic pattern of the crossed regions is quite peculiar, with the highest mountains of the Apennine range, has justified the building of such infrastructure for easing the communications between both regions, in lack of acceptable alternatives (the only ones are the Roman-time Tiburtina-Valeria road and a very old low-speed railway). On the other hand, its layout resulted quite complex while the construction required many viaducts and tunnels, needing lengthy and costly works.
