VII International Conference “In -service Damage of Materials: Diagnostics and Prediction ” (DMDP 2023) Development of the methodology for assessing the serviceability of existing gas pipelines of Ukraine under green hydrogen transportation Olha Zvirko* Karpenko Physico-Mechanical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Naukova St. 5, Lviv 79060, Ukraine Abstract The usage of the existing network of Ukrainian gas transit pipelines for transporting hydrogen to Ukrainian and EU customers is considered. Hydrogen transportation through gas pipelines is a complex problem, in which a crucial aspect is a possible violation of the pipe integrity due to the well-known negative effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of steels. The gas transmission pipelines in Ukraine have a long operation time, which leads to a deterioration of the physical and mechanical properties of steel. Accordingly, there is a high risk of integrity violation of operationally degraded pipes during hydrogen transportation. To evaluate the prospects of using the gas transit system for the transportation of hydrogen or its mixture with natural gas, it is necessary to analyse the current technical state of pipelines, estimate the impact of hydrogen on long-term operated metal, and substantiate the conditions of safe operation of the gas transmission network, taking into account the steel degradation. These topics constitute the core of a research project recently approved and financed by the National Research Foundation of Ukraine. The project aims to develop a methodology for assessing the serviceability of pipe steels of existing gas pipelines in the case of hydrogen transportation, based on novel criteria of reaching the critical state for metal and operability criteria, taking into account the current structural and mechanical state and their hydrogenation.
