regarding the use of metal powders processed by L-PBF, providing guidelines to perform a bibliometric analysis and to deliver a instructions on which further studies may be conducted. To accomplish this, an extensive bibliometric analysis concerning this topic is conducted using the Scopus database and the most relevant keywords.

2. Methodology Literature reviews are increasingly playing a crucial role in synthesizing scientific research content in order to leverage the existing knowledge, build a coherent line of research and provide evidence-based insight to properly formulate professional judgement and expertise [4]. Different qualitative and quantitative literature reviewing approaches are currently used to understand and organize the literature. Among these, bibliometrics is capable to provide a systematic, transparent and reproducible review process based on the statistical information regarding the bibliographic attributes of a document, also called the metadata, which comprises several elements such as author’s name , title, keywords and other pertinent information. Since the volume of new content can become drastically overwhelming and impossible to deal, bibliometrics play an important role in structuring and analyzing large bodies of information, predict trends over time, identify important research areas, identify shifts and boundaries of the subjects, detect the most prolific authors, institutions and countries, and to depict the “big picture” of existing documentation [5]. The general science mapping workflow and guidelines were firstly described by Borner et al. [6] and consist of five major stages: (i) Study design (ii) Data collection (iii) Data analysis (iv) Data visualization (v) Interpretation In the first and second stages, research questions are formulated and an appropriate data base, research query and timespan are chosen to deliver an appropriate picture of the field of research through time. In the third and fourth steps, one or more bibliometric or statistical software tools are employed, and a visualization method is selected along with an appropriate mapping software. The last stage addresses the interpretation of the retrieved results from the bibliometric analysis [7]. 2.1. Study Design This work aims to perform a bibliometric study on the Additive Manufacturing of Metal Alloys in the Aeronautical Sector to evaluate the current trends of the state-of-the-art. To accomplish this, the following research objectives were defined: • Present a systematic, transparent, and reproducible methodology to perform a bibliometric analysis based on a single database; • Identify the most influential authors, documents and sources, as the relationships between different research institutions and countries; • Highlight the groups of most used keywords and terms, evaluate their trends and identify the major drawbacks that shall be overcome in this field of research; • Foresee future developments and applications in the aeronautical sector based on the research groups of interest.
