To ensure an applicable fatigue approach even considering service loading conditions, the influence on the resulting component related properties must be taken into account. Due to the large number of challenges of additively manufactured structures, e.g. regions with different local microstructures including defect distributions, conventional design methods can reach their limits, at least from an economic point of view. Representative Structural Elements can help to reduce the complexity of the design. For this purpose, the Representative Structural Elements are analyzed with the help of the cyclic stress strain behavior and the fatigue life curve in different levels of details. © 2023 The Authors. Introduction The additively manufacturing of metallic structures offers an enormous strength and thus also lightweight construction potential. Provided suitable tools are available with which this potential can be exploited at an early stage in the design process.
