3. Methodology 3.1. Progressive collapse analysis (PCA method)

Ultimate strength with respect to vertical bending moment is assessed since the bending in vertical plane is assumed as the most dominant load for IWV. Sagging is the type of bending in which the elements above the neutral axis are in compression while the elements below the neutral axis are yielding. Hogging is the opposite of sagging: elements above the neutral axis are in yielding and elements below the neutral axis are in compression, see Fig. 2. If extreme bending is applied to the hull girder, elements under the compression will progressively undergo buckling and furthermore, a post-buckling behavior.
