The development of innovative, automated, and non-invasive techniques to assess structural problems is highlighted among these. The main reasons include the issues associated with ageing infrastructures reaching the end of life, as well as the challenges associated with the maintenance of structures designed without taking this critical factor into account. The structures considered at the base of this study are the Italian highway tunnels. They have shown in several monitoring campaigns the presence of anomalies of the lining thickness in several sections. This paper presents an analysis of the stress state of a concrete plate with a thickness anomaly subjected to a significant temperature fluctuation. The research permits to calculate the critical thickness as a function of temperature fluctuations and load conditions on these areas of the lining. This approach can enable a safer management of dangerous situations within the tunnel by using the parametric analysis of the measures database via artificial intelligence algorithms. © 2023 The Authors.
