Singh a a Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Uttarakhand-247667, India Abstract This study investigates the combined effect of pre-corrosion and microstructural inhomogeneity due to welding on the corrosion resistance and its subsequent effect on fatigue crack growth resistance in the aluminum alloy 2024. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization techniques were utilized to assess the corrosion phenomena. The localized corrosion results showed that weld nugget zone due to finer grains have better corrosion resistance compared to the columnar grains in the as-received material. The fatigue behavior of corroded specimens, after 100 hours of immersion in 3.5% NaCl solution, was investigated under load-controlled sinusoidal waveform at 10 Hz frequency. The tests were performed at two different load-ratios: 0.1 and 05.
