This problem was solved by augmenting the triangulation given to N E T G E Nby
information on edges in the mesh which have to be kept in the new triangulation. At the
location of the edges the N E T G E Ntriangulation is finer and does not lead to
overlapping crack faces.

At M T Uand at the K T HStockholm about 15 Titanium-Alloy 4-point bending
specimens with initial slanted crack were tested under cyclic loading. The experimental
set-up is shown in Fig. 3. Due to the slant angle of 45° the bending momentleads to a
mixed-mode loading of the initial crack [2] (initial crack length is 5 mm). The original
mesh, the domain and a triangulation of the initial crack is illustrated in Fig. 4.
